The popularity of Amsterdam as a cruise destination has grown over recent years. Further growth is expected in the number of ships that will visit the city in 2017 and beyond. Amsterdam Cruise Port will keep you up to date about the recent developments. Update June 2017 The municipality of Amsterdam made public the final preference decision to cross the IJ waterway and to speed up the following decision terms. The preference consists of, a cycling bridge from the Java island across the IJ waterway to the Amsterdam north district near the PTA. The decision for a cycling bridge west of the PTA from Stenenhoofd to the Amsterdam North district will be taken in 2020 this is 6 years earlier. The decision to build the Sixhaven metro station will also be taken in 2020. Then they will decide whether a pedestrian’s tunnel will be needed at Amsterdam central station. Update April 2017 To accommodate the ncreasing demand, Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) and Port of Amsterdam have been investigating the possibilities for a second terminal. Due to urban developments, the Amsterdam North district opposite the waterway of PTA is rapidly expanding. In response, the municipality of Amsterdam is investigating several options to connect this suburb to the city centre, including larger ferries, tunnels and bridges. The municipality will take a preliminarily decision regarding these options in the summer of 2017, which will then be further investigated. A final go-no-go decision will be taken no earlier than 2020. Up and until 2022 at least, PTA will remain accessible to all cruise vessels at its current location. Should a bridge eventually be built, the PTA will still be accessible for ships of up to 210 metres. Ships larger than 210 metres will be accommodated at the new cruise terminal, which of course will be fully operational by the time the current PTA becomes inaccessible to these vessels. This location will be equipped with every conceivable facility, ready to operate turnarounds for the biggest ships in the world. The municipality of Amsterdam acknowledges the importance of the cruise industry and, together with PTA and Port of Amsterdam, will ensure that cruise ships are always welcome in the city of Amsterdam. PTA will of course cooperate with the cruise lines during the whole process.
